About

Jennifer John

Jennifer John is a creative dynamo. Her musical talents are many and varied and her list of achievements demonstrate the breadth and depth of her abilities and ambitions.

Whether as Business Woman of the Year for Arts and Culture, the co founder of award-winning music company Sense of Sound and manager of its namesake – Sense of Sound Singers, the stunning a cappella ensemble – her work is exemplary.

The beginnings of her musical life began as a child in the east end of London. As a member of Newham Academy of Music where she studied violin, piano and voice, she discovered a passion for classical music. When she migrated to Liverpool in 1983 she discovered jazz. She won a place at Mabel Fletcher college, and it was there that she discovered a natural ability to improvise vocally and also started to think of her voice more as a musical instrument. Her gradual transition from pop and jazz bands into the world of a cappella singing saw her as a member of various vocal ensembles, including The Descendants, whose appearance on iconic show TheTube earned her a reputation for being a distinctive singer.

There are no limits to Jennifer John’s talents. She is a singer/songwriter, performer, choir director, vocal arranger, teacher, workshop leader, mentor, manager and business woman.

She brings a contagious passion and energy to all of her work and believes strongly that singing is a universal language that encourages community cohesion and healthy collaborations.

Jennifer says: "It's one of the magical gifts in life that easily unites us socially, creatively and spiritually. People love to sing in all kinds of scenarios and the natural resonance that group singing creates guides people into a safe familiarity and closeness that stays with them profoundly even when the singing has stopped. People who sing together especially in choirs become families of choice and it's powerful. My aim, through the creation and development of singing initiatives and projects, is to bring people and communities together naturally and joyfully."

Studio

"Whenever I put headphones on in the studio and the music starts the experience is surreal and exhilarating. I love the process of recording vocals, co-writing and composing vocal arrangements. It gives me a buzz."

Killerfernandez

"...Think Massive Attack, Lamb, Lali Puna, Mo' Wax, Ninja Tune or even Morr Music and you are on the right track. Tight knit funk, beat-box, Hammond organs, double bass, and angelic vocals - it's all here wrapped up in some terrific songs. Do not miss."

- Rough Trade, April 2009.

Training and Education

JJM SPRING / SUMMER COURSES 2019

Jennifer John is committed to providing affordable training for singers at all levels of ability. In 2018, she piloted her first series of small singing groups in order to do this. The aim was to be able to provide a group service that also catered for participants’ individual needs, while costing a lot less than one-to-one vocal coaching.

"Singing is like most things. The more you do it, the easier it becomes. There is a familiarity in singing regularly with other people that increases confidence and a feeling of well being among everyone involved. Unfortunately, a competitive culture has determined that we are much more self critical when it comes to the sounds of our voices and that is a real shame, because in my opinion the joy of singing far outweighs the judgement. My aim has always been to try and redress the balance by providing high quality, challenging and fun training in a safe and supportive environment."
- Jennifer John

Please find the latest training courses, aimed at adults aged 16 and above - everything from master-classes, small singing groups and sight singing for those wishing to improve their skills individually, within choirs and for session singing. The classes will be held in several venues in Liverpool city centre.

All classes are taught by industry professionals and are designed to fit around working life, with part-time evening, weekend, and daytime courses in a variety of musical styles and disciplines. The training caters for all levels, from beginners to advanced - and includes the opportunity to join some of the most exciting large scale singing events in Liverpool.

Just Can’t Wait (Saturday) by 100%, features Jennifer John on vocals. The track reached no.1 in various dance charts and was remixed by Stonebridge and Carl Kennedy.

"I listened to Wayfaring Stranger yesterday and was completely overwhelmed by it. Your voice floats through the melody like an echo of something long lost yet still cherished. It is absolutely superb, and I thank you most profoundly."

- Terence Davies, Film Director

Artistic Direction and Project Management

Creative and overseeing projects is my passion and I have been involved in many, ranging from: leading on and achieving recognition by The Guinness Book of World Records for the most people singing The Beatles' Love Love Me Do in a round; through to BBC Worldwide annual conference projects with large numbers of choirs and musicians coming together to deliver spectacular events that focus around choral singing and mainstream TV brands (eg Doctor Who, Wolf Hall etc) and everything in between. My skills lie in the recruitment of the choirs/singers, programming the musical and artistic content, overseeing the rehearsal schedules and, when required, conducting the final events.

Jennifer and a strong creative team organise large-scale massed singing events in Liverpool, incorporating choirs from across Merseyside and the Wirral.

If you are a member of a choir and would like to be added to the mailing list for inclusion in future events please contact sing@jenniferjohn.co.uk.

The choirs on the steps of St. George's Hall were amazing! None of this would have been possible without your support, direction, professionalism and maybe a little glitter!

Michael Carey, Liverpool Pride

Dear Jennifer, We would like to pass on our sincere thanks for the tremendous work you put into the Hillsborough event at St. George’s Hall, which was an overwhelming success. The event was so well received by the families and the public who attended and the positive media coverage once again showed how this city comes together in unity ... Elspeth, Liverpool Socialist Singers

Jennifer is an outstanding vocal facilitator. She instantly inspires trust and focus in a group that she has only just met; creating an environment where all singers feel safe and empowered to explore their voices and express themselves. With a skilled hand and open mind, she takes the group on a journey; ranging from those anxious about using their voice for the first time to experienced singers and vocal practitioners. I learnt so much from watching her work. We didn't want the session to end!

Jessie Maryon Davies, MD, Lips Choir

All of the choirs sounded amazing and you helped make the evening truly magical and impactful for all of our guests. I'm not sure if you're aware but that the Exec. Producer and Production Team were in the audience and they absolutely loved the performance! Also a personal thank you from me for turning a spark of an idea (via a long distance conversation with Jennifer!) into a reality. It was a beautiful performance, that may have just brought a tear to my eye.

Sarah Bidder, Senior Event Manager, BBC Worldwide

Wow, THANK YOU so much Jennifer! This AMAZING opportunity and experience is all down to you and what you have fostered and created over the years and for my part I am sincerely grateful and overjoyed to have been a part of it all. It was INSPIRED, LIFE AFFIRMING and so necessary for me after such a long time away from being apart of such wonderful ensemble.

Singer/West End Actress

I've known Jennifer John for many years and I knew she was a good singer / arranger but when I worked with her I realised she was a little bit better than just good, she's a natural!

John Power, Cast

Jennifer John worked with us in Broughton Hall Music Department over a 6 month period acting as a Music Mentor to students interested in vocal work. It was a joy to witness Jen's professionalism, skill and genuine interest in our young people. In a few sessions, Jen managed to take the girls through varied exercises and repertoire culminating in two performances at our Summer Concert: Thinking Out Loud and Deep River. The girls found the experience really challenging but so rewarding. I can highly recommend Jen as an inspirational vocal coach who works with energy, enthusiasm, great skill and deep professionalism: Thank you SO much!

Ms S Hayes, Head of Expressive Arts - Broughton Hall Catholic High School

Through working with Jennifer, our children and young people have developed their performance styles, confidence and understanding of different vocal techniques. Her range of experience and quality of work ensure we can confidently offer our Youth Company members a fun, informed and professional experience through working with Jennifer.

Vicki Ciaputa, Youth Company Manager, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic

Jennifer John is more than a vocal facilitator of extremely high calibre, she is an artistic leader and in recognition of this, Liverpool Pride has invited her to become one of our Patrons, alongside Right Reverend Paul Bayes Bishop of Liverpool, Angela Eagle MP, Peter Price, Broadcaster, and Flight Lieutenant Caroline Paige, and we’re glad to say she has done us the honour of accepting. We look forward to working with Ms John to shape our artistic strategy and to many more brilliant musical projects that promote equality and dignity through inclusive artistic practice.

Joan Burnett, Trustee for Arts & Community, Liverpool Pride

Jennifer made an immediate positive impact in her role at the RNCM and has added value to the team and to the student learning experience. Through her industry contacts, our popular music choir were invited to perform with Blossoms at the BBC’s Music Day - an experience they valued highly and one which the RNCM’s national profile benefited from greatly. She has successfully tutored Principal Study vocalists and has provided insightful industry guidance to her cohort of final year students in their Professional Engagement - she has provided a first class service.

Andy Stott MA BA PGCE SFHEA, Head of Popular Music, Royal Northern College of Music

After just spending half an hour with Jennifer the other day, you saw for yourself how she just transformed how I was singing the song and turned it into something beautiful. ❤️🎼

Joanne Head, Student

Jennifer is a leader in her field and a go-to practitioner for numerous professionals within the sector. The immediately obvious talents of Jennifer and her team delivered fantastic results for our studio recording session and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them for other projects looking to capture vocal performance of the highest quality.

Peter Shilton, Singer/Songwriter

Still on a high from Cream Classical! Bet you are too. Thank you so much for inviting myself & my singers to be a part of such an amazing event; we all loved every minute of it. The five solo singers including yourself are such good role models for our young musicians!

Annamarie Newton, Choir Director

It was a real pleasure working with Jennifer & Sense of Sound Singers. They are amazing!

Blossoms

We have worked with Jennifer John for many years on various musical projects more recently our series of Cream Classical shows which to date have been staged in Liverpool, London and Belfast. As the vocal facilitator, Jennifer is responsible for curating the vocalists required for each of the shows including the 32 strong choir which have performed with us this year. Cream Classical is one of the fastest selling shows in the UK and she is an integral part of the success of Cream Classical which has been recognised across the UK and beyond. We look forward to working with her on future projects.

Gill Nightingale, Head of PR and Communications, Cream Group Ltd.

At a recent event in Salford, Jennifer led a brilliant workshop which demonstrated the stress-busting power of singing; within the space of just an hour she had shown us both its physical and mental benefits and transformed an initially reluctant group of delegates into a scratch choir, laughing together and singing in harmony.

Gerri Moriarty, Arts Consultant, Live Well Make Art

I couldn't be happier with the way the evening turned out. I thought it was a great night of music, and all the feedback I've heard has been excellent. I think it's one of my favourite projects that we've done so far, same goes for a lot of the ensemble I think. You and Stuart have created a really beautiful collection of music, and I'm excited to start looking at continuing this project through recordings, gigs, etc.

Daniel Thorne, Immix Ensemble

Wow, Wow, Wow Jennifer!! That was exceptional, what on earth have you done here! This is one of the most powerful, sensational and emotional things I have ever witnessed on Saturday night at Cream Classical and to see you up there in the middle of it all was something else. It was brilliant to watch you orchestrating this and you looked in a different zone altogether. It honestly left me captivated, inspired and speechless! Thank you!!

Ryan Dooley, Organiser of Come Together networking events

I’ve known Jennifer for over twenty years and see her passion and determination for including people from every background to gain confidence with improved wellbeing through music, so it was our privilege to work in partnership with her and her Team for the 100 Women Voices Event at St Georges Hall. It was our final celebration event to mark the centenary year of some women gaining the right to vote. This event was truly a breathtaking and inspirational event with a 100 women performing together in a Choir lead by Jennifer as well as many talented singers and poets. We will without hesitation continue our partnership work with Jennifer as J.J.M share our values and vision in supporting women in the creative arts.
